Good Ground System = Good Fence Performance
A properly installed ground system is required for an electric fence to work.
Without grounding, electricity cannot find a path back to the fence controller
and little or no shock is given. Make sure you take the time to install your
ground system properly or your electric fence will not perform effectively.
How Does A Ground System Work?
An animal touching the fence wire and the earth simultaneously
provides a path for electricity to follow. The electricity passes through the
animal into the soil and back to the ground rods, which are connected to the
ground terminal of the fence controller. Only then is the circuit complete and
the animal receives an electrical shock.
Basic Grounding
You'll need the following items to properly ground your electric
fence:
(3) 6-foot or 8-foot copper or galvanized ground rods (
GR8 or 07104.96 )
(1) insulated hookup wire, 12 or 14 gauge (
UGC50, 1404.92, or
7090.92 )
(3) brass ground rod clamps ( 07105.96
)
Line clamps to connect insulated hookup wire to the fence line. The type of
clamp used will vary with the type of fence line you are using:
Steel wire galvanized line clamps (07110.96)
Poly wire galvanized line clamps (07110.96)
For more information on grounding your electric fence system refer to
installation information.
The Fence Builder™ interactive design tool will automatically include a
grounding and installation package appropriate for the type of fence you need.
NOTE: detailed installation and grounding instructions are included with every
Zareba Systems electric fence controller.
