All About Fence Chargers

Fence energizers are the heart of the fence system, providing the source for the electric current that flows through the fence wire.  Fence energizers vary by amount of current they output and their power source.

The size of fence energizer needed is dependent upon your fencing needs.  These needs are determined by three main factors: the length of the fence, number of wires, the power source (AC, DC or Solar), and the type of animal being contained or excluded.

TYPES OF CHARGERS

There are three main types of fence energizers: AC-Powered, Battery-Operated and Solar-Powered.  The source of power for the electric fence controller to function determines the type of charger you will be using.  Each type of fence energizer has specific situations in which it is most desirable to use.

Selecting the right electric fence controller with adequate power for your enclosure is critical to keeping your animals safe.

Factors impacting your choice of fence energizer:

• Power source (AC, battery, or solar operated)

• Energy output (in joules)

• Type of animal being controlled

• Length of fence

• Amount of vegetation growing on the fence

Note: If you have access to AC power, the AC operated models are the most convenient. They typically have greater energy output as well.  This gives you more flexibility for future expansion.

AC-Powered Electric Fence Controllers

Zareba® AC-Powered fence chargers are a great option where you have a reliable source of 110-volt or 220-volt electrical power.  We offer a range of electric fence controllers for distances up to 200 miles.

There are two types of AC operated fence energizers:

Low-impedance electric fence controllers utilize special circuitry and transformers to maintain high energy levels on the fence. Zareba® low-impedance models are recommended and available with ratings up to 200 miles and for heavy weed conditions. They're ideal for longer, multi-strand poly wire, tape, rope or high tensile fence systems. They can be used for all animals including predators.

Solid-state fence energizers are effective in controlling short-haired livestock, small animals and pets where light to moderate weeds exist.

Battery Operated (DC-Powered) Electric Fence Controllers

Battery operated fence energizers are ideal for remote locations or areas without access to AC power. Zareba® DC-powered chargers use either standard 12-volt, 6-volt, 4-volt, or D-cell batteries (batteries not included).

All Zareba® battery operated fence energizers feature:

• Easy-access terminals and mounting options for quick connections and installation

• Rugged, weather resistant cabinets

• Most models are UL and CSA listed

• Fence OK indicator lamp

• Up to a 3-year warranty that includes damage caused by lightning  

Zareba® low-impedance fence energizers utilize special circuitry and transformers to maintain high energy levels on the fence. They're available for up to 200 miles and for heavy weed conditions. Ideal for longer, multi-strand poly wire, tape, rope or high tensile fence systems, these chargers can be used for all animals including predators.

Solid-state fence energizers are an effective and affordable option for controlling shorthaired livestock, small animals and pets with light to moderate weed conditions. Zareba® has models available for up to 10 miles of fence.

We recommend 6-volt or 12-volt rechargeable deep cycle batteries (not included with fence charger). Note: Frequently check and recharge your batteries to maintain secure fence operation.

Solar-Powered Electric Fence Controllers

Solar operated fence energizers are ideal for remote locations. The Zareba® solar chargers include 6-volt gel-cell batteries that once fully charged maintain its charge for up to two weeks, even in cloudy conditions.

Our 3-mile and 10-mile range solar fence energizers feature convenient carrying handles, making them fast and easy to move. They also have versatile mounting brackets for quick installation on any wood post, T-post, U-post, or the side of a building.

All Zareba® Systems solar fence energizers use low impedance technology to maintain maximum energy levels on the fence. They can compensate for energy loss caused by weeds or fence load and can be used to control most animals. Models available for up to 30 miles of fence.

It’s a good idea to have back-up gel-cell solar batteries and trickle chargers to assure continuous power for your fence.
