Containing Exotics

Electric fence systems for exotic animals are superior to barbed and woven wire fences, as the short, safe pulse of electricity creates a psychological barrier that trains animals to avoid the fence.

These electric fences can be designed for many different kinds of animals besides livestock and horses. They are effective, reliable and affordable, and require minimal maintenance.

Deer & Elk

Electric Fence for Deer and Elk Containment

Non-domesticated animals, like deer and elk, can be a challenge to contain. Remember they are wild animals and:

  • are not conditioned to human contact
  • tend to range over wide areas to forage
  • are motivated to reach food sources
  • can jump higher than most other animals
  • spook easily and may exhibit excitable behaviors
  • when nervous or scared they run without noticing fence lines
  • are stressed by unfamiliar or unexpected sounds (dogs
          barking or traffic)
  • are prone to predator attacks

Containing deer and elk

For these reasons, deer and elk need fencing that provides both a physical and psychological barrier like high tensile electric fences. Electrified high tensile fence is the best choice for elk and deer because it can be tall, durable and secure, and also serves to keep predators out.

Electrified high tensile fencing is an excellent choice for a permanent perimeter fence. These affordable, easy to install, low-maintenance fences can last up more than 40 years and are the best solution for deer and elk control.

The high tensile wire and spring system of a high tensile fence allow it to flex and return to its original shape if it is run into, making it optimal for deer and elk.

Wire spacing should be close enough to prevent the animal from stepping through or putting its head between the wires. Attach seven to nine wire strands to posts that stand at least 70” above ground. Be sure that wires are placed near the nose level of the animal.  To prevent jumping, an electrified top wire above the deer or elk’s head is recommended.

In dry, rocky or frozen ground, you may need to install a ground wire return system.

Containing deer and elk

Deer and elk require a fence charger that can maintain 4,000 – 5,000 volts on the fence line. Voltage levels are impacted by vegetation on the fence line, length of fence, and diameter of wire. Use a low impedance fence charger.
