Controlling Predators
Besides being used to contain animals, electric fence systems can also be used to keep out predators. Predators, such as wolves, coyotes, and bears would love to make dinner of your livestock, horses or exotics, but you can prevent this from happening by using a reliable, effective electric fence system. | | | Electric Fencing to Keep Out Predators While electric fences are normally used to contain animals, they are also equally effective for keeping certain predators out, such as dogs, wolves, and coyotes. Predators are highly motivated to get to the animals on the other side of the fence – such as livestock, or in the case of bears, bee hives. Domestic animals become conditioned to the electric fence, usually avoiding it after one or two shocks. However, predators may endure repeated shocks in their determination to get to their “food source”.
Predator fences need to shock severely, plus serve as a physical barrier. The fence needs to be sturdier, have wires more closely spaced, and may need to be taller than the animals. For these reasons, we recommend permanent high tensile fence systems for keeping out predators. Note: To keep out deer and small nuisance animals, refer to Critters. Bears can be a serious concern because when they feel the shock form an electric fence, sometimes they can become angry.
