Installation Tips

Posts

Wood posts are recommended for high-tensile fencing. Posts should be four inches in diameter for line posts, six to eight inches for corner and gate posts. In some cases, T-posts can be used as line posts. Posts should be spaced between 30 to 90 feet apart for level terrain, 15 to 20 feet for difficult animals and/or rolling terrain. Post spacing will depend on the following factors:
  • animal(s) being controlled
  • number of wires used
  • number of spacers between posts
  • amount of animal pressure (more animals per acre, closer spacing)
  • terrain

Fence Wire

Zareba high-tensile fence wire is 12.5-gauge aluminized steel wire. The number of wires and wire spacing necessary will depend on the type of animal being controlled as well as amount of animal pressure. In addition, the number of wires also determines the type of bracing used at corner and gate openings.

High tensile is typically tensioned to approximately 200 to 250 pounds. A ratchet in-line strainer or tightener is used to tension wires. Use a tension indicator spring to adjust each wire to the proper tension.

For line posts, use Zareba's pin lock or tube insulators to allow fence wire to move as needed.

For corner and end post insulators, wrap-around, donut corner, high-strain corner or porcelain insulators can be used.

Electrifying High-Tensile Fencing

To electrify your fence, make electrical jumper connections between all electrified wires using a section of 12.5-gauge wire. Connect and attach the wire to a hot wire with crimping sleeves. A section of insulated plastic tube should be used to prevent the wire from touching the non-electric wires. Do this until you have connected all electrified wires.

Once jumper connections are made, connect your electric fence charger to the fence. Use a low impedance charger to provide adequate power on the fence line. A 20,000 volt hookup wire should be used to connect the fence terminal on the charger to the fence wire

At least three 1/2-inch 6-foot galvanized ground rods should be used. Ground rods should be set about 10 feet apart and driven within 20 feet of the charger. Connect the charger to the ground rod using a 20,000 volt hookup wire run from the ground terminal to and brass clamps mounted on the ground rod.

Accessories

Fence wire

Zareba's high-tensile wire is 12.5-gauge aluminized steel wire featuring a breaking load of 1500 pounds and a tensile strength of 200,000 psi. We offer spools of high-tensile wire in varying lengths from 1,000 feet up to 2 miles.

Insulators

Pin lock or tube insulators are the recommended choice for line posts in high-tensile fencing. For corner and end posts, a selection of insulator options exists including, wrap-around, donut corner, high-strain corner or porcelain. Many insulator options are available from Zareba, Red Snap'r and Fi-Shock to meet your high-tensile fencing needs.

Corner bracing

Corner posts require a brace assembly for each fence leading to it. Zareba carries the staples, brace pins, and post brackets you will need to install strong, quality corner braces on every corner post in your high-tensile fencing system.

Crimping / Splicing

Crimps, wire links, and crimping tools come in handy for splicing high tensile wire such as when installing jumper connections or repairing a broken wire. Check out Zareba's selection of crimping and splicing products to make your fence wire installation and repairs fast and easy.

Tensioners

High-tensile wire is typically tensioned to 200 to 250 pounds. A ratchet in-line strainer or tightener is used to accomplish this. Browse our collection of fence strainers and accessories to find the right tools for tensioning your high-tensile fence.

Special Tools

When installing high-tensile fencing, some specialty tools such as in-line strainers, crimpers, or wire cutters may be needed. Zareba offers a complete selection of specialty tools to make your high-tensile wire fence build a success.
