Very good product for small areas By None

I purchased one of these units a few years ago and have been very pleased with it. I use a few months each summer to keep critters from climbing my garden fence. I use a lawn tractor battery to power it and recharge every 3 weeks or so. I have not had and critters climb my garden fence since using this. I place the electric fence wire on small fiber glass posts placed a few inches outside the wire fence. I place one wire about 6 inches off the ground and another one about 3 feet off the ground. It has done the job.

Effective, practical and very good value for the money By Antje

I'm very pleased with this portable charger. It's light, effective and good value for the money. As others reported, our first one gave out after a few years but it got plenty of use and served us well. We use is on netted sheep fencing and our sheep do respect it. I've also used it for temporary tape horse fencing successfully. I like how easy it is to move, which is important since we rotate our fencind three or four times a week. I bought as second one as a spare because the value is so good and it's good to have a back up.

Excellent product By Suzie

I have had mine for 12 years. Only use a few times in the summer on my electric netting fence when I let my two goats and mini horse out to graze. I have been super happy with this unit!! Easy to set up, and works fine just using "D" batteries. Mine quit working last summer. Will be looking to replace with another. Also would like to mention it is well worth the money.

Best I've found for easy set-up and it works, plus a good price By RiverOwl

This is my second one of this particular charger. It would get five stars if the first one were still working. But, in fairness, that charger went through a lot and did it's job for several years before it gave out. Well worth it considering the modest price. I use this for a smallish movable sheep paddock. I tried other chargers but this one was the most effective and definitely the least hassle to move. We move the fence every day or two (sheep are on lawnover duty). I pound in a ground rod, attach the charger to the rod, hook it up to a deep cycle car battery, and presto. Enough power to make the sheep respect the fence. I also used it for electric tape horse fencing and it was very effective. Perfect for traveling to shows but also semi-permanent summer fencing. I plan to take better care of this one - putting a cover over it to keep the rain off (even though it is designed for outdoor use), and I will store it in the basement over the winter.

Best battery pack fencer I\'ve owned. By
I bought this electric fencer two years ago for travelling to rodeos and competitions as well as at home use. It has been flawless, I couldn't be happier. Conveniently sized, and easy set up. Would be perfect for taking outback into the mountains for those horses that you are unable to hobble. I even used it for a stubborn pony that would just walk through barbed wire, it put an end to his fence climbing abilities. Would definately recommend this charger to anyone who wants a portable electric fencer. Well worth the money.

Failed Units -- quality By
Loved these units , while they worked. Mean time before failure is about three years. I wish I could agree with the other posters. Second one just failed ( D cell use) . As suggested by customer service post,,,I always ck the fence/etc. Now , I have a line powered trickle charger on it -- works great , but 150 foot cord is on the lawn. Again, great little unit, while it worked--- just tired of the replacement schedule . Thanks for letting me post . Regards,JackStillwater, Minnesota

Worked great, and hen... By
This unit worked fine on the D batteries for all last year to keep deer and rabbits, etc., out of a 36x12 foot garden. This year it clicks for awhile and then no clicking. If I push up on the switch it'll start clicking, but stops again after variable time. Not sure what to think. Wish it worked as it did last year.

My third unit is in failure-mode too! By
I bought my first B10LI fence charger on May 27, 2010 at Tractor Supply. It stopped working 3 months later and was replaced on September 1, 2010, by them. That unit also stopped working and was also replaced by them on August 2, 2011, just short of the 1 year warranty experation. Now, the third unit is also failing, just outside of the one year warranty. Note that I only use the unit to protect our large vegetable garden from the end of May through September each year, or for about 4 months a year. So, the units aren't even lasting a year. The failure mode was the same on all three units. The output, as measured with a test meter starts to drop and the audible sound the unit makes diminishes in direct proportion to the output reduction. No output equals no sound. The voltage tests are measured at the fence wire to ground wire(!) and from the output terminal to the ground terminal. The indicator light also becomes very faint as the unit's output drops and stops lighting when output is zero. My 6-strand fence conforms to Zareba guidelines and my batteries are fresh and of the deep-cycle marine type. My soil is low-land and moist and I use 2 driven 8-foot galvanized steel ground rods. I also have a bare perimeter ground wire (12 ga. galvanized steel electric fence wire) strung on the ground at the base of each of my 30 steel fence posts. It is also connected to the ground rods. I have excellent conductivity to the remote side of the fence when using only 1 ground rod, but I use 2. My battery voltage is also correct, as measured with a NAPA brand tester. I also use Zareba insulators and aluminum poly-wire.When Tractor Supply replaced the second unit, the manager told me that they would not replace the third unit if it should fail. I thanked them for their patient support and service and not to worry, because if the third unit failed, I would not expect them to replace it and I would consult with Zareba. I sent an e-mail to Zareba informing them of the issue, when the second unit failed and I never got a response. I find it interesting that another user has had the same experiences. The Tractor Supply store that I got the unit from no longer carries this model either. When I installed the third unit, I set the output switch at "LOW" vs the previous "HIGH" setting and this unit lasted slightly longer. I don't know if there's a relationship to life-cycle, or not.In any case, I'm disappointed in my experience with the B10LI. I will need to obtain another unit to protect my new investment in this year's garden. I am looking at alternative products and have not yet ruled-out Zareba.Sincerely submitted,A "high-Tech" farmer

Q&A
Q.Just to protect my camping spot with 4-8 poles what size or type of ground rod do I need 30 square feet
A.

To ensure adequate grounding, we recommend three ground rods installed 6-8ft deep and 10 feet apart.

Q.How long does a set of d cell batteries tend to last? Thanks
A.

The battery charge can last up to 30 days.

Q.What is battery saver mode?
A.

There are 2 settings for powering on this unit. The ON1 setting (high power) is for longer fences or animal training and will reduce battery life. The ON2 setting (low power) is for short fences and maximizes battery life.

All About Fence Chargers

Chargers are the heart of the fence system, providing the source for the electric current that flows through the fence wire.

The size of charger needed is dependent upon your fencing needs. These needs are determined by three main factors: the length of the fence (number of wires), the power source (AC, DC or Solar), and the type of animal being contained or excluded.

See our comparison charts of our fence chargers to help you determine which is best for your needs.

Types of Chargers

There are three main types of chargers: AC-Powered, Battery-Operated and Solar-Powered. The source of power for the charger to function determines the type of charger you will be using. Each type of charger has specific situations in which it is most desirable to use.

Selecting the right fence charger with adequate power for your enclosure is critical to keeping your animals safe.

Lightning and Power Surge Protection

Lightning is often the cause of fence charger failure. When lightning strikes the fence, the sudden power surge can travel down the fence wire and damage the fence charger.

A variety of properly installed products can prevent or limit lightning damage.

FAQs

FAQs about Chargers

Q: What factors should I consider when purchasing a fence charger?

A: The power source (AC, Battery or Solar Powered), energy output (in joules), the type of animal being controlled, the length of the fence (more wires need more power) and the amount of vegetation growing near the fence should be considered when you are selecting your fence charger.

Q: What does Low Impedance mean? I see it on chargers in stores and on websites.

A: Low impedance chargers increase the joules (energy) on a fence line if weeds or other vegetation touch the fence. Low impedance chargers are ideal for long, multi-strand poly wire, tape, rope or high tensile fence systems. Low impedance chargers are recommended for most applications and can be operated by AC, DC or Solar Power.

The other type of charger, known as a solid state charger, is usually used to control short-haired livestock, small animals, and pets where only moderate weed conditions exist. These chargers deliver a medium-amperage shock and can be operated by AC or DC.

Q: Why does my fence charger make clicking noises?

A: Most fence chargers have a pulsed output. Every time it “clicks,” it is releasing energy to the fence that has been stepped up or increased through a capacitor and a transformer. This release of energy makes noise. Not all chargers make the clicking noise. The noise is designed for the owner of the charger and serves no functional purpose.
