Manuals are not specific to Zaraba model, genaric, and conflicting preparation statements By Jay

So to prepare the unit for use: 1) Is it...….. "To prepare your charger for use, switch the on/off button to the “on” position and allow it to receive 48 hours of sunlight. From there, your charger is ready for use." (as stated in the info page of the model ESP10M-Z) or, 2) Is it ….."Turn the unit off for three days in the sun" (as stated by Zaraba Systems response's in the Reviews Section. Would like to measure the 6 volt battery but after removing the screw not sure with way the panel pulls out to access the battery and don't want to break it. After three days in off position I switched it to on, the red light is blinking (with no fence connections made yet) and using a brand new DEFT-AFW digital fence tester all I get are three red dots but no voltage reading. Took the meter to a different model fencer and meter read 4.5KV then in two seconds stopped working. This is a different issue. Not sure problem is the meter of the controller. The open circuit resistance between fence and ground wires measures 2 megaohms but has not been connected to the controller yet.

Hello Jay,

Thank you for providing this feedback! We are sorry for this experience. For the best results, we recommend charging the unit in the off position for three days in the full sunlight. After charging, the energizer can be tested across the terminals (with the fence and ground wires removed) with a fence tester. The output should be 9,500 volts +/- 20%. If the tester is not working correctly, please feel free to contact us directly for warranty assistance.

Excellent product for the money By Mitch

So far so good. Clear instruction and easy to install. Using in conjunction with about 2,000 ft. of the 1/2" heavy duty poly tape and 1,000 ft. of standard wire, provides plenty of shock to keep the horses off the fence.

Don't plan on it keeping cattle in By Kenton

Bought this to power a pasture with between 1/2 -3/4 mile of fence. 3 strand high tensile with the middle wire hot and the other 2 directly grounded to the fencer with four 8' ground rods connected. Holding both the hot wire and ground wire can only get a small shock. Tried a double 200' length of poly wire inside the perimeter for controlled grazing with one hooked to the hot wire and one to the ground. No way will it keep cattle in.

Response From Zareba®
Jennifer : Consumer Relations Representative

When testing the fence line and energizer, we recommend using a fence tester only. This is the only method that will provide accurate results. The Zareba® 8-Light Electric Fence Voltage Tester (Model RSVT8) is a great option.

One thing to note when using poly products is the voltage level on the fence line will automatically drop in half due to the multiple conductors. This energizer outputs 9,500 volts without any wires attached to the unit (+/- 20%). With a 1/2 -3/4 mile of fencing, there will be approximately 3,800 volts on the fence line. This energizer will be sufficient as we recommend a minimum of 2,000-3,000 volts on the fence line to contain cattle.

Please feel free to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-ZAREBA (1-855-592-7322) with any questions or for additional assistance.

Great Chargers, Great Customer Service By Jodie

I have two of these units. One is six years old. After four years it had to go in for service and has been working perfectly ever since. My second unit is well over five years old. It just stopped working. Wasn't the battery which is supposed to last just a few years. I called Woodstream, they sent me a return authorization number, I sent them my charger, and it appeared back here impossibly quickly. It looks like a brand new unit! Thank you Woodstream for your great customer service. My horses would thank you but they are too busy out IN the pasture munching.

disappointed By Fer

was working great for about seven month and now it has gone bad. The unit stopped working so I called customer service and they need me to mail in the unit or take it to a repair shop which is over 650 miles from where I live. I have animals that I need to contain and I just don't have the time to be doing all of that. I wished they offer a better warranty service. Overall I was disappointed with the unit I figured It would last me at least two years not seven months. :(

Electric Horse Fencing By Steve

The Zareba 10 mile Solar Fence Charger is a great asset to fencing horses in a remote paddock. In a very short time the horses learn the fence and respect the new boundary. Very rarely have I had any problems with horses "escaping" their enclosure. The ribbon is also easily visible to the horses and will break if a horse inadvertently get into the fence. The ribbon is also easily repaired by simply tying it back together at the break. I am a very happy customer and continue to find more and more uses for my Zareba fence.

Great product! By Brian

Purchased this charger spring of 2016. This charger is working great for me so far. Keeps my beef cows inside perimeter. I took it out of the packag, installed it and turned it on the same day. I was standing fifty feet away from the first calve that tested the wire and I could hear the "snap" once the calves nose touched the wire! Lesson learned! Just tested battery today after a very cold winter here in the north east and it still tested at 6 volts. Running approx 3 miles of wire on t posts with plastic insulators. I have mostly clay soil here so I installed 5 ground rods. This solar charger deserves 5 stars.

Q&A
Q.How do I get the battery out? I do not have a manual and am not sure how to get to the battery to replace it
A.

The battery compartment is on the back of the energizer on the right side. You may need a torq screwdriver, size 15 to get into the compartment. Please feel free to contact our Consumer Relations Team at 1-855-5-ZAREBA (1-855-592-7322) with any questions or for further assistance.

Q.how do I change my zebra 10 mile fence charger from pulse to solid charge?
A.

We do not recommend modifying any energizer. This unit is designed with a pulsating output. If a continuous output is desired, we have several energizers that can be used. Please feel free to contact us directly for further assistance. Our Consumer Relations Team can be reached at 1-855-5-ZAREBA (1-855-592-7322).

Q.My 10 mile solar charger has been in service for about 2.5 years. It recently stopped working. The red light is on solid (is not flashing). What does that mean? Someone else asked the question but did not get a direct answer.
A.

Typically, this light should pulse. If it does not pulse, we recommend testing the energizer and battery to determine if it is working correctly. To do so, first test the charger itself by disconnecting both the fence and the ground wires from the terminals and testing across the two terminals using an electric fence tester. If the charger is not providing the correct voltage, we recommend testing the battery with a battery tester. Our Consumer Relations Team is happy to provide additional assistance. Please feel free to contact us at 1-855-5-ZAREBA (1-855-592-7322).

All About

All About Fence Chargers

Chargers are the heart of the fence system, providing the source for the electric current that flows through the fence wire.

The size of charger needed is dependent upon your fencing needs. These needs are determined by three main factors: the length of the fence (number of wires), the power source (AC, DC or Solar), and the type of animal being contained or excluded.

See our comparison charts of our fence chargers to help you determine which is best for your needs.

Types of Chargers

There are three main types of chargers: AC-Powered, Battery-Operated and Solar-Powered. The source of power for the charger to function determines the type of charger you will be using. Each type of charger has specific situations in which it is most desirable to use.

Selecting the right fence charger with adequate power for your enclosure is critical to keeping your animals safe.

FAQs

FAQs about Chargers

Q: What factors should I consider when purchasing a fence charger?

A: The power source (AC, Battery or Solar Powered), energy output (in joules), the type of animal being controlled, the length of the fence (more wires need more power) and the amount of vegetation growing near the fence should be considered when you are selecting your fence charger.

Q: What does Low Impedance mean? I see it on chargers in stores and on websites.

A: Low impedance chargers increase the joules (energy) on a fence line if weeds or other vegetation touch the fence. Low impedance chargers are ideal for long, multi-strand poly wire, tape, rope or high tensile fence systems. Low impedance chargers are recommended for most applications and can be operated by AC, DC or Solar Power.

The other type of charger, known as a solid state charger, is usually used to control short-haired livestock, small animals, and pets where only moderate weed conditions exist. These chargers deliver a medium-amperage shock and can be operated by AC or DC.

Q: Why does my fence charger make clicking noises?

A: Most fence chargers have a pulsed output. Every time it “clicks,” it is releasing energy to the fence that has been stepped up or increased through a capacitor and a transformer. This release of energy makes noise. Not all chargers make the clicking noise. The noise is designed for the owner of the charger and serves no functional purpose.
