Why Choose an AC-Powered Electric Fence Charger?

Many property owners prefer reliable AC-powered electric fence chargers such as the Zareba® AC-Powered, 5 Mile Charger over other options such as battery- or solar-powered units, particularly when easy access to an AC power source is available. While all three types can deliver an effective power solution, an AC-powered unit can help you avoid the power interruptions that come with battery failure or limited exposure to sunlight.

Protect your electric fence charger from the weather by placing it indoors in a moisture-free place, or outdoors in a covered enclosure.

Dog WAS climbing over backyard fence

I have had the electric fence up for about three weeks now and the dog learned quickly that he didn't like the outcome by going near the chain link fence with the electric wire attached. It was extremely easy to install and was working within hours. We have a husky who learned to climb over the chain link fence. We installed the wire at his nose height which is a couple of feet off the the ground. So far so good. We have had no dog climbing issues. This is a great solution for any dog owners who has a similar problem.

Q&A

Will it damage my 5 Mile charger to operate at 2000 volts for prolonged periods of time during rainy weather? When it dries out for a day the voltage goes back up to 6000 volts. I’m trying to avoid digging up a buried section and replacing the plastic sleeve. Thanks!
Question by: Cheryl on Mar 20, 2026, 2:45 AM
Thanks for reaching out.

Operating your 5-mile AC fence charger at around 2000 volts during rainy weather will not damage the unit.

Rain increases conductivity along the fence line, which can cause the voltage to drop. Once conditions dry out, resistance increases and the voltage returns to normal levels.

That said, a consistent drop to 2000 volts during wet conditions may indicate some leakage along the fence, possibly in the buried section you mentioned. While it’s not immediately harmful to the charger, it can reduce fence performance.

Which chargers are for horses
Question by: Su Graham on Mar 23, 2026, 11:29 AM
Hi, thank you for reaching out. All of our electric fence controllers are strong enough for horses. The difference between models is not the type of animal they can handle, but rather how much fence they are designed to power up.

Electric fence chargers are rated by distance (for example, 5 miles, 25 miles, 60 miles, etc.), which refers to the length of fence they can effectively energize. Even smaller units can safely contain horses, while larger units are designed for longer fence lines.
