All About Poly Rope
Electric fence wire conducts the electric charge from the fence charger around the length of the fence. Position one electrified wire at animal’s shoulder height; this will cause it to touch the fence with its nose, making it back up.
Wire types include smooth steel wire, aluminum wire, high tensile wire, poly wire (stainless steel wire strands woven with polyethylene) poly tape and poly rope. Your selection will depend on the type of fence, the type of animal you are containing and how long the fence will stay in place.
Poly wire, poly tape and poly rope are good options for temporary, rotational grazing or to be used along the top of a fence as they are more visual for animals such as horses. For a permanent perimeter fence, you should use steel or aluminum wire.
Features and Benefits
- Highly visible to animals
- Wind passes through, low wear & tear
- Convenient to install and repair
- Will not rust
- Excellent for horses
- Temporary fencing
- Rotational grazing
- Equine fence kits
Poly rope is an excellent high visibility choice for your fence line. It is stronger than poly wire, with stainless steel strands woven through the rope.
The steel strands ensure maximum electrical energy is carried through the fence line at all times. Use a splicer to maintain a good connection. Most poly ropes are about 1/4 inch in diameter.
Note: For best results, use a low impedance fence charger to energize poly wire and poly rope fences. Poly rope should not be used with continuous output chargers.More about Fence Wire»
The height and spacing of the wires will vary with the animal you are containing. Position one electrified wire at animal’s shoulder height; this will cause it to hit the fence with its nose, making it back up.
Use poly tape for horse fencing or in rotational grazing since the animals can easily see this highly visible electric fence wire. Splice poly tape with splicer buckles specially designed for easy splicing and repairing of poly tape.
Q: Why should I place one wire at the animal's shoulder?
A: Positioning one electrified wire at animal’s shoulder height will cause the animal to hit the fence with its nose, making the animal back up. See illustration below.
Q: Does the size of the wire make a difference?
A: Electricity travels through and over the surface of wire. This is important because it explains why larger diameter wire conducts more electricity. If a wire is larger in diameter, it has more surface area over which the electricity can travel. The more surface area, the less resistance. Always use the largest diameter wire available; it will transmit the greatest amount of electricity.
Since electricity flows through and over the surface of the wire, anything on the surface, such as rust, will impede the flow of electricity, causing a loss of voltage and amperage.
Q: What kind of fence wire do I need?
A: Generally, use the most highly visible fence wire you can afford -- for the simple reason that animals can't avoid a fence they don't see. For horses, many owners prefer polytape in conjunction with steel wire. For other animals, yellow and black poly wire may do. And high tensile systems require high tensile steel wire.More Fence Wire FAQs»
